Asbestos fibres. Colour enhanced light micrograph of fibres of asbestos, an amphibole mineral. The most common types of asbestos are crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile. The fibres can be compressed, felted or woven to make insulating boards, paper and shingles. Asbestos is widely used in the construction, chemical and process industries because of its fireproof and insulating properties and its superior corrosion resistance. If the smaller fibres are inhaled in quantity, they lodge in the lung causing the respiratory disease of asbestosis. Magnification: unknown.
