Probiotic lactic acid bacteria. Light micrograph of a colony of lactic acid bacteria used in probiotics. Lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid during the process of fermentation. Many such bacteria are part of the natural flora of the human body, and some species are used as probiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms consumed for their beneficial effects, particularly for general digestive and urogenital health. They are sometimes taken during or after a course of antibiotics to help decrease the chances of subsequent development of opportunistic infections from unwanted gut bacteria.
