Asbestos refers to naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals that are mined and used for their properties such as thermal insulation, chemical and thermal stability, and high tensile strength. Asbestos is used as an acoustic insulator, thermal insulation, fire proofing, and in other building materials. While the fibers are strong and heat resistant, they can become airborne and create health problems such as Asbestosis and Mesothelioma if they are inhaled.
