Heart growths, light micrograph. Section through heart tissue showing thrombotic vegetations (lumps, deep pink regions at top) on the endocardium of one of the mitral valves. The endocardium is the tissue that lines the inner heart and forms the valves, including the mitral valves. This growth is the result of damage to the heart by an autoimmune response. An example of an autoimmune response is rheumatic fever, in which the immune system becomes hypersensitive in response to a Streptococcus bacterial infection and attacks the body's tissues.
