Heinrich Kayser (1853-1940), German physicist. Kayser worked on spectroscopy. His discoveries include the detection of helium in the Earth's atmosphere by analysing the spectrum of light from the Sun during a solar eclipse in 1868. Kayser was a professor at the University of Bonn from 1894 to 1920. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1911. Kayser was nominated three times for the Nobel Prize in Physics (1905, 1916 and 1917).
