Acute bacterial otitis, otoscope view. The tympanic membrane (eardrum) is bulging and thickened and is red and inflamed. The eardrum is likely to perforate with a blood stained muco-purulent discharge when the severe pain from the stretching of the inflamed membrane will rapidly subside.
