Fungal middle ear infection, otoscope view. Following a perforation of the tympanic membrane (eardrum), a moist discharge occurred. After several courses of antibiotic ear drops an opportunist fungal infestation with Aspergillus niger developed. The fungal hyphae (white) are sensitive to antifungal agents but the black spores are resistant and a prolonged or repeated course of antifungal agents may be needed to eradicate the condition.
