Chronic otitis media, otoscope view. Also known as glue ear, chronic otitis media (middle ear infection) results in an accumulation of fluid in the middle ear, which causes hearing loss. This view shows the tympanic membrane (eardrum) retracted in a case of a one-sided sterile effusion in an adult. The associated conductive hearing loss persisted despite decongestants, antihistamines and topical nasal steroids.
