Light micrograph of a MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical System) microphone, installed in nearly all modern smartphones. The very small mountable device has a hole to let the acoustic waves reach the microphone chip inside. Looking through that hole you can see the integrated circuitry. For dimension comparison a match head was captured together with the microphone unit. Microscopic contrast technique: Incident darkfield together with incident brightfield. Magnification: 30x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
