Colonial algae and algal strand. Light microscopy footage of single cells of Gonium pectorale algae swimming in a cork-screw motion in the vicinity of an algal strand. The algal strand is comprised of single cells bound together in a line. Their cellulose cell exhibits optical activity and appears to glow as a result. The nuclei can be seen at the nodal point of a cytoskeletal scaffolding of actin. This network plays a role in cellular signalling pathways and as a transport network for motor proteins carrying protein payloads around the cell.
