Hurricane Irma destruction in the Caribbean. Hurricane Irma made landfall on 6 September 2017 on the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. It was a category 5 storm with sustained winds of 295 kilometres per hour. First hit was Barbuda, where over 90 percent of buildings were destroyed. Significant damage and loss of life were reported on the other Leeward Islands as Irma continued northwards. Many hundreds of boats and yachts were sunk, with extensive damage to coastal buildings, coastlines and coral reefs. Filmed on the island of Saint Martin (Sint Marteen).
