Ovulation and fertilisation, illustration. At lower right, a mature female reproductive cell (ovum, red) is being fertilised by a male reproductive cell (sperm cell). This results in the formation of a fertilised egg, which under the right conditions then develops into a zygote, embryo, foetus and baby. The process from follicular maturation in the ovary to release from the fallopian tube into the uterus, is shown at left. The four stages shown after fertilisation are: the 4-cells stage (2nd day), the 8-cells stage (3rd day), the morula stage (4th day), and the release into the uterine cavity (6th day, start of implantation phase).
