Fungal fruiting body in a lichen. Light micrograph of a section through an apothecia from a lichen. Lichen are a symbiotic combination of algae and fungi. An apothecia is a bowl-shaped ascocarp, the fruiting body of ascomycete fungi. It is this structure that produces the fungal spores. The section shows asci (sporocysts) at different stages in the spore-generating layer (hymenium). The dense spots in blue correspond to the gonidia (algal reproductive cells) dispersed between the filaments of the fungus. Magnification: x280 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
