Lichen fruiting bodies. Lichen growing on a rock, displaying apothecia (orange), the fruiting bodies of the fungus component of this organism. Lichen is a symbiotic combination of algae and fungi. An apothecia is a bowl-shaped ascocarp, the fruiting body of ascomycete fungi. It is this structure that produces the fungal spores, contained in structures called asci (sporocysts).
