Streptococcus bacteria. Light micrograph of sputum (mucus coughed up from the lungs) containing streptococci. Streptococcus bacteria are an example of cocci (round bacteria) that form chains. There are over 50 species of Streptococcus bacteria, some of which cause disease in humans. This is a Gram stain preparation (these bacteria are Gram-positive). Magnification: x2200 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
