Sundew plant leaf gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of one of the glands on the leaf of a sundew (Drosera sp.) carnivorous plant. Insects are trapped and digested on the glandular hairs on the leaves, with the droplets of digestive fluid giving rise to the 'sundew' name. The insects are used to increase the plant's mineral nutrition, as sundews grow in mineral-deficient soils. Magnification: x800 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
