Caption

Geobacter waste bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Geobacter sulfurreducens bacteria (orange) being used to digest metallic waste (here magnetite, magnetic iron oxide, grey). Geobacter bacteria are able to survive in extreme environments with different species able to eliminate pollution ranging from uranium waste to petroleum contamination, and waste organic matter. Geobacter are anaerobic bacteria (living without oxygen) that use metals to gain energy in the same way that humans use oxygen. Magnification: x8000 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
