Mite exoskeleton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the exoskeleton (exterior) of a mite. Mites are a subclass of arachnids, and are found on a wide variety of insects, plants and animals. Insect exoskeletons are mostly made of a polysacchiride called chitin. A protein called sclerotin is found in the hard surface of an insect exoskeleton. Magnification: x4700 when printed 10cm wide.
