Light micrograph of a cross-section through an edible snail's (Helix pomatia) foot. Snails have a single muscular foot that creates movement by successive contractions. The foot also secretes mucous, which reduces friction during locomotion and improves suction, enabling the snail to climb vertical surfaces.
