USGS scientist monitoring Kilauea eruption. Kilauea is a volcano on the main island of Hawaii. An eruptive episode began in May 2018, known as the 2018 lower Puna eruption. As part of their monitoring work, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) geologists, part of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), collect samples of volcanic spatter for laboratory analysis.
