This testing is part of the faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) process. FMT aims to restore the healthy balance of bacteria and other microbes in the colon. It is mostly used for severe and otherwise untreatable conditions such as Clostridium difficile infection. Donors are screened and tested. Stool samples are diluted, filtered and the bacteria preserved before storage at low temperatures. The sample is delivered to the transplant recipient in liquid form. It may be delivered in capsule form, as an enema, via the anus into the large intestine using a colonoscope, or via a tube that enters the nose and passes into the small intestine (a nasoduodenal tube).
