Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of raw wool fibers from a sheep. Remnants of tallow and skin can be seen on the fibres. The cuticle (outer layer) of the hair comprises overlapping scales. Wool fibres are strong and elastic and have been used by humans for about 6000 years. Magnification: x530 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
