Caption

Scarlet macaw (Ara macao). Scarlet macaws live in the forests of Central and northern South America. They live in large flocks, and nest in holes in the trunks of forest trees. They feed on fruits, seeds and nuts, using their large, powerful beaks to crack open tough nutshells. These birds were popular as pets, and were extensively hunted for export. They are famous for their mimicking ability, often being able to reproduce whole sentences. Photographed in Costa Rica.
