Normal knee and knee with osteoarthritis. Illustration of a frontal (anterior) view of a human knee joint, showing the normal appearance (left) and a knee with osteoarthritis (right). Osteoarthritis is a joint disease aggravated by mechanical stress. Symptoms include joint pain, stiffness and swelling. Visible here is erosion of cartilage (yellow), formation of bony spurs (osteophytes) at the joint margins (on both the femur and tibia), and a swollen and inflamed joint capsule (centre right). In severe cases, a knee replacement operation will be needed to restore the function of the joint.
