Cardiac defibrillator. Coloured X-ray of the chest of a 27-year-old woman who has been fitted with a cardiac defibrillator (dark area, lower right). This is a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD). Here, it has been implanted under the left armpit. Wires lead from the defibrillator to a subcutaneous probe (centre) placed parallel to the sternum (breast bone) above the patient's heart. Such devices are used to treat abnormal heart rhythm. If ventricular fibrillation occurs, the device delivers an electrical shock that resets the heart rate to a normal rhythm.
