Chronic pericarditis. Coronal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the chest of a 59-year-old woman, showing the fluid (white) surrounding her heart (centre right) due to chronic pericarditis. Pericarditis is where the sac around the heart (the pericardium) becomes inflamed, causing accumulation of pericardial fluid or blood between the pericardium and the heart. If not treated the heart is compressed by the fluid and this can be fatal.
