Diatom. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Triceratium sp. diatom. This is a planktonic marine unicellular alga. It has a mineralised cell wall (frustule) divided into two halves. The frustule contains silica and provides protection and support. There are many phytoplankton diatom genera that are an important part of the food chain.Magnification:x 2000 when printed at 10cm wide.
