Caricature of the Italian astronomer, mathematician and engineer Giovanni Cassini (1730-1817) holding a telescope. Cassini is best known for his discovery of four satellites of the planet Saturn and the division of the rings of Saturn. The Cassini space probe, launched in 1997, was named after him and became the fourth to visit Saturn and the first to orbit the planet.
