Ghrelin hunger hormone, molecular model. Atoms are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (orange), nitrogen (purple) and oxygen (pink). This peptide hormone, produced by the stomach and pancreas, stimulates hunger. Ghrelin levels will rise before a meal to increase food intake and stimulate gastrointestinal movements. Ghrelin is also linked to enhancements in learning and memory, and also stimulates the production of growth hormone. This model does not show the full structure, with the rough grey tubing representing the carbon-hydrogen 'backbone' of the molecule.
