Dolomite rock crystals, polarised light micrograph. This rock was originally a sedimentary limestone, formed from reefs and sediments laid down millions of years ago in a warm tropical sea. Over time, the process of dolomitization exchanges the original limestone calcium ions for magnesium carbonate. This destroys the original sedimentary structures. This specimen, prepared as a thin section, is from Schlern, Peitlerkofel, South Tyrol, Italy. Magnification: x40 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
