Illustration of the Mars Helicopter Scout (MHS) on the surface of Mars. The MHS is part of the Mars 2020 mission, which is scheduled to launch in July 2020, and land on the planet in February 2021. The mission will land a rover (in background) on the surface to look for signs of past life and collect core samples for retrieval by future missions. The solar-powered MHS will make small journeys from the rover to look for interesting targets and plan the rover's driving route. It is a proof of concept mission to test the use of heavier-than-air craft in the Martian atmosphere.
