Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cross section through cylindrical epithelial cells that line the lumen of the small intestine. Cells of epithelial tissue are tightly packed and form a continuous sheet. With electron microscopy, the very small intercellular spaces (green, 15-20 nm) that separate the epithelial cells can be seen.
