Caption

Desquamating epithelial cell, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) and inset light micrograph. In the normal function of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, the cells detach or slough off (desquamate) from the epithelial lining at normal intervals. These cells still retain their nuclei.
