Caption

Feather duster worm (family Sabellidae) fluorescing yellow underwater, photographed at night using blue coloured flashlight and a yellow filter. These polychaete worms live in tubes constructed from sand, held together with a glue secreted by their bodies. Their feathery plumes emerge from the tubes to filter the water for nutrients. Blue light excites pigments within some underwater organisms such as this, causing them to emit a fluorescent glow. This image is part of a series showing the identical specimen in white light and blue light. Photographed in the Red Sea, Egypt.
