ATP. Computer artwork of a molecule of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is a carrier of metabolic energy in the cell. Energy is stored in the chemical bonds and is released when the molecule is broken down. The chemical formula of ATP is C10. H16. N5.O16.P3. The atoms are shown as cylinders and are colour-coded: carbon (yellow), oxygen (red), nitrogen (blue) hydrogen (white) and phosphorus (green). The molecule consists of a bicyclic ring joined to a monocyclic ring. Joined to this is a straight chain of phosphate groups.
