A digital thermometer is used to check the temperature of an unknown metal in a styrofoam cup used as a calorimeter in a San Clemente, CA, high school chemistry lab calorimetry experiment using the First Law of Thermodynamics. Calorimetry is the measuring of changes in state variables of a body for the purpose of deriving the heat transfer associated with changes of its state. The object of the experiment is to identify the metal.
