A beaker of water and a numbered test tube containing an unknown metal are heated on a hot plate in a San Clemente, CA, high school chemistry lab calorimetry experiment as a digital thermometer is used to check the temperature. Calorimetry is the measuring of changes in state variables of a body for the purpose of deriving the heat transfer associated with changes of its state. The object of the experiment is to identify the metal.
