Dumped tyre on the seabed, overgrown with seaweed. Rubber and plastic waste is typically not biodegradable and persists in the environment if not disposed of correctly. Such waste can have a severe long-term effect on the marine environment, both as large items that can entangle animals and plants, and as it breaks up into microscopic fragments that can enter the food chain. Some waste can form habitats for marine organisms. Photographed in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Spain.
