Embryo embedded in uterus, animation. The developing baby is an embryo from just after conception to around 8 weeks. It is then known as a foetus from around 8 weeks until birth, which occurs around week 39 to 41. Visible here is the umbilical cord and the amniotic sac enclosing the embryo. It is embedded in the placenta on the wall of the uterus.
