A detail of the damaged heat shield of the European Space Agency's Intermediate eXperimetal Vehicle (IXV), an atmospheric re-entry demonstrator launched on a Vega rocket on 11 February 2015 and recovered the same day in the Pacific Ocean following a 100-minute suborbital spaceflight. The image shows part of the actual flight vehicle on display at the 2015 Paris Air Show. The underside exhibits charring from re-entry heating.
