Mesosaurus prehistoric marine reptile. Computer illustration of a Mesosaurus sp. prehistoric reptile swimming, showing its long sharp teeth. Mesosaurus lived during the Early Permian period (around 299 to 252 million years ago), in what is now southern Africa and South America. It was one of the first marine reptiles, and had many adaptations to a fully aquatic lifestyle.
