Phenol crystals on a watchglass. Phenol (C6H5OH), an aromatic alcohol, is a crystalline solid. It dissolves in water, forming a weakly acid solution, carbolic acid. Phenol is corrosive and poisonous. It is used in industry in the manufacture of phenolic and epoxy resins, dyes, explosives, plastics, drugs and perfumes.
