Subacute granulomatous thyroiditis. Light micrograph of a section through thyroid tissue affected by subacute granulomatous thyroiditis (De Quervain's thyroiditis), showing giant cells (centre left). This condition is a form of resolving thyroiditis, a group of disorders that cause thyroidal inflammation. The cause may be viral in origin, sometimes preceded by an upper respiratory tract infection. Treatment is with beta blockers, aspirin, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories), or corticosteroids. Magnification: x1100 at 10 centimetres wide.
