Lupus rash. Close-up of chronic lupus erythematosus on the face of a 52-year-old female patient. Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory condition caused by an autoimmune disease when the body's tissues are attacked by its own immune system. Patients with lupus have antibodies in their blood that are targeted against their own body tissues. Symptoms may be limited to the skin, but more often lupus also causes internal problems such as joint pain.
