Caption

Skin in Wegener's disease. Close-up of a lesion on the leg of an 85-year-old male patient affected by granulomatosis with polyangiitis and systemic vasculitis (Wegener's disease). This chronic disease is a form of vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels) that affects small- and medium-size vessels in many organs but most commonly affects the upper respiratory tract and the kidneys. It can lead to nosebleeds, stuffy nose, crusty nasal secretion and inflammation of the uveal layer of the eye. Damage to the heart, lungs and kidneys can be fatal. Treatment is typically with corticosteroids and other similar drugs, or immunosuppressants for severe disease.
