Iron (II) hydroxide precipitation. Test tube containing sodium hydroxide solution reacting with iron (II) sulphate. This reaction produces a dark green precipitate of solid iron (II) hydroxide in a colourless solution of sodium sulphate. Pure iron (II) hydroxide is white, however even trace amounts of oxygen make it greenish. This reaction is used as a test for the iron (II) ion. For the formation of the iron (III) hydroxide precipitate, see image C040/2677.
