ISS lunar transit, January 2018. International Space Station (ISS, centre right) transiting a Full Moon. The transit speed was around 8 kilometres per second. The ISS Expedition 54 crew of six astronauts were on board: Acaba, Hei, Tingle, Misurkin, Shkaplerovand Kanai. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 390 kilometres, compared to the Earth-Moon distance of around 385,000 kilometres. The Moon is around 3480 kilometres across, compared to the ISS width of around 100 metres. The ISS orbits the Earth in around 92 minutes. The Moon's orbit takes around 27 days.
