Buckminsterfullerene, ball and stick model. Buckminsterfullerene, known as a 'buckyball', is named after Richard Buckminster Fuller and is made purely from 60 carbon atoms (black). It has a structure consisting of interlinking hexagonal and pentagonal rings that form a hollow spherical shape similar to a soccer ball.
