Soviet Marya RDS-3 atomic bomb test, 1951. This atomic bomb test, also known as Joe 3, took place on 18 October 1951, at the Semipalatinsk Test Site in what is now Kazakhstan. This test had a yield of 41 kilotons of TNT. A total of 456 Soviet nuclear tests were conducted at the Semipalatinsk site between 1949 and 1989. This test was the third atomic bomb developed by the USSR, and had a plutonium core inside a uranium shell. It was the first Soviet air drop nuclear test, from a Tu-4A bomber, detonating at an altitude of four hundred metres.
