Comparing light bulbs. Thermogram comparing an energy-efficient fluorescent light bulb (left) with an incandescent light bulb (right). The energy-efficient bulb produces more light and less heat than the incandescent bulb, as shown by the colours. The colours show variation in temperature. The scale runs from white (warmest) through red, yellow, green and blue to purple (coldest). Thermography records the temperature of surfaces by detecting long-wavelength radiation.
